Kids in Action runs an after school program everyday in one of our 11 schools. The program begins immediately following classes, and takes place in the school gym. The goal of the program is to build relationships with children, show them love, and to teach them positive lessons with a bible basis.
With all of their belongings they will need for home time in hand, the children find their way to the small group they have been designated. Small groups are divided up evenly, and to best suite the
needs of the children in the group, they are mixed age, gender, and grade.
Small group provides an opportunity for relationships to form more intimately. In our large group setting it is very easy for kids to feel lost, and more than likely that leaders will be spending more time managing the crowd than building specific relationships with individuals. Small group provides a suitable context for one on one interactions. With in the small groups, the children actively learn through story, craft, games, and conversation. This time, while being a great time for fun and relationship building, also is a great opportunity to further the lesson by providing an opportunity to question and discussion of the lesson of the day.
A large part of the Kids in Action program time is spent in a large group setting. Large group provides a great opportunity to play games that are more extravagant, and involve more people. The goal of the games time is to have fun, spill of energy, and to learn how to properly play with one another. This large group time also provides the opportunity for lessons that are more extravagant, these include object lessons, skits, and participation skits. The program always has a them such as: Space, Super heroes, or Pirates, and all of our lessons, and skits are based around this theme. The skits are created to entertain, and to relay the lesson, they are most often of the comedic variety.
Finally, to close the program we have a meal. Every child has an opportunity to eat a warm meal, and to eat this meal in community. The children collect themselves back in their small group, and eat their meal with one another and their leader. This time provides the answer to a very natural need for food, as well as love as this time is to just talk, and share whatever is on their heats.
