Planting seeds of Faith, Hope and Love.
Faith
We teach them: About God. Who he is. His promises. His love.
Hope
We help them see: Things can be better. Things don’t have to stay the same. They have a future.
Love
We help them feel: Our love. The love of those around them. Their love to share.
Who We Are:
For the last 80 years the Hope Mission has been involved in the lives of the homeless of this city. Through these efforts it was realized that not only do we need to be reactive to the suffering of the people in our
society, but also proactive in their lives. Kids in Action was born from this belief.
Our hope is to sow positive seeds into the Children of Edmonton that will grow into positive traits in their lives. To provide for them in their youth some of the tools that may help them to overcome the pitfalls of life and avoid the cycles of addiction and abuse that our society suffers from.
What We Do:
We have 11 schools that we are currently apart of. These schools are: Lee Ridge, Abbott, RJ Scott, Rundle, Sifton, Evansdale, Norwood, Horse Hill, Balwin Elementary, Balwin Junior High, and Belvedere. We function in these schools in various capacities. All of our programs are free of charge and welcoming of all those that wish to attend.
Program
Two programs exist at the core of what Kids in Action does, an after school program and a lunch program. Both programs function in a similar capacity, they are a time for fun, relationships, and learning. Each child is placed a small group with a staff–the ratio is kept close to 6-1 (kids to staff)–these small groups stay together for most of the program time providing opportunity for relationships to grow between that staff member and their small group peers. The children learn through skits, and activities, they have time to play together by way of large group games, and all of them get a pastry as a treat at the end of program. For the after school program (which runs immediately following school till 5:00) a warm meal is provided, which for some of the students meets a very natural need in their lives, and for all of the students provides an opportunity to talk to someone who wants to listen.
Class Room Help and Mentoring
We believe that the more we can be in the lives of these children the more impact their will be. We offer our services to the schools we are in to see where they would need us most, and then wesupport them in that way. We find this to be a great way to further our relationships with the children but also with the school as a whole. In some schools we are working in the classrooms with those children that need the extra support, in other school we work one on one in a mentorship environment much the same as Big Brothers and Sisters. Due to scheduling constraints we are not able to carry out this part of Kids in Action in everyone of our schools.
Community
We want to have relationships not only with the children in our schools but with their parents, and other members of the community. We try to be as visible in and supportive of our communities as we can be. One of the ways that we do this is by facilitating community family events. Some examples of a community family event would be: A Christmas ginger bread house build off, a Halloween Pumpkin decorating contest, or a Canada day Celebration. The idea behind these events is to facilitate events for families to come and just be families.
Clubhouse
We believe that we need to meet children where they are at. So when they are at school we are there, but what about when they are not? we realized that if we are a program that only exists in schools that we are limiting ourselves, and therefore we are not able to invest as much time in our kids lives as we would like. The Clubhouse will be an after school elementary drop in. Kids will be able to drop in from Tuesday to Saturday and and take part in an ‘unstructured structured’ environment of fun and relationships. This is a new program and will launch in September 2008 at the RW Tegler center of the Hope Mission.
